Generation Next
From WWII to the Text n Tweet generation - A review, analysis and discussion of today's teen culture. Multi-media based presentation with lots of interaction and tips for parents and youth leaders.
Tolerance Unmasked
This generation speaks the same language. The problem is the words and ideas don't mean the same thing. Based on the content and concepts documented in the book by Josh McDowell called The New Tolerance, this conference will turn lights on in the minds of your leadership that will help them buy into the urgency of the gospel.
Planning with purpose
From an initial calendar evaluation to establishing a strategy for annual planning of major and minor events. Every event has a primary and secondary purpose. Our job is to help our leadership and parents understand our process and how they can plug in.
Small group dynamics
Whether it's Sunday School, Discipleship group or home cell groups, give your volunteer staff a booster shot with a seminar of high energy interaction and creative methods. These sessions will help establish and highlight the extreme value of small groups and how to make them highly successful.
How Youth Learn
A seminar on adopting and adapting methods that teach teenagers based on how THEY learn. Many times adults teach based on how they were taught years ago or how they like to teach. We must teach youth based on their retention styles while giving leaders the tools they need to succeed.
Evangelism
A mini-course on witnessing and teaching youth lifestyle evangelism in today’s post-modern culture. We examine the culture and prepare strategies to match but we do not water down the message.
Budgeting
A necessary element most youth leaders would rather skip. This session will provide shortcuts and strategies that will leave your administrator impressed and wondering how you get it all done.
Today’s Teen Culture
An in-depth examination and discussion of today’s youth culture. This session raises the veil on what is shaping teen behavior in regards to music and media.
Abstinence (WAIT certified instructor)
this seminar utilizes a variety of strategies to promote biblical purity by teaching filtering skills and self control to middle and high school age youth.
Recruiting & Using Interns
With extensive experience in recruiting and implementing Intern Ministry, let me help you take your ministry to a new level. Interns need you and you need them. Find out how to accomplish this with little or no budget. I will share manuals and strategies that will launch or enhance your Intern Ministry.
General consulting
Many times, it is just a matter of mapping out a plan and talking with someone who understands the problems, process and pitfalls. From weaknesses to strengths we will establish a highly successful plan together.
Leadership development
How solid and mature is your leadership team? How often do you invest in your leadership? They need training and reminders of what is important and what the priority and vision is. You set the tone and you cast the vision but let an outside voice help them implement and commit.
Parenting Ministry
Wise youth leaders know the importance and benefit of ministering to the Parents of Teens. However, knowing how important it is and providing something for them are two different things. These sessions will inspire, motivate and enlighten your parents. Host a Parenting Summit, a Parent Matters Event or team up with your children's minister for a total Parenting workshop. They will support and thank you all year long.
Program Administration
Sadly, there is an administrative side to ministry, even youth ministry. How incredible would it be if you could exchange admin minutes for relational minutes? You could multiply yourself into the lives of students and leadership.
Time Management and YM
Ever been asked this question: "What do you do the rest of the week?" The truth is that youth leaders put in more hours than anyone on staff - at least that seems to be the reality on most staffs. But working smarter with a time management plan is much better than working harder to produce results. Time is the most valuable commodity in the US and most weeks, you don’t have enough.
Current Issues in YM
Today’s students live in a world that has a real bite to it. There has never been a time when hot topics play such a prominent role in weekly ministry to students. Between the gay agenda, grind dancing and lack of modesty, today’s teens face moral challenges on a regular basis. This effects what we teach and how we counsel.
Media Shout/Easy Worship & Computer Imaging

We especially want to thank Charles Boyd for helping us through his Student Ministry Essentials consulting organization. What a blessing Poker has been to us during this season! He is a true, experienced professional who loves God and this church. We are grateful for his vision in creating this unique ministry and for being such a strategic help in preparing us for a greater future in student ministry. Student Ministry Essential truely was a consulting, empowering, encouraging, and equipping ministry for our students and student leadership.
Dr. Jay Dennis, Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church at the Mall
Dr. Charles (Poker) Boyd is both an academician and practitioner in Student Ministry. As an adjunct professor for The Baptist College of Florida, he has excelled in both facets of the work. I recommend him to you for biblical, Godly, and practical leadership of students and student leaders.
Robin Jumper Ph.D. The Baptist College of Florida
Poker Boyd came and brought ALL of his resources with him: a servant’s heart, love for our students, encouragement for our parents, personal integrity, unbridled enthusiasm, and a contagious love for Jesus.
Dr. Phillip Hanes, Idlewild Baptist Church, Tampa, Florida
I have used SME for many youth ministry needs. But my favorite resource is the leadership training (Essential Seminars) designed for youth leaders. Poker uses his many years of experience, along with his knowledge of current youth trends, to effectively communicate to youth leaders how to reach teenagers in our world today. Our youth leaders look forward to our yearly training weekend; to quote one of our leaders, “It’s more than a reminder, it’s like drinking a Red Bull full of youth instruction.”

Cotton Candy and Plate Spinning
I was a young boy when the circus visited our small town. Our family loaded up the Fleetwood station wagon and went to the big show. From food carts and clowns to endless contest booths, I have two distinct memories that remain. First, my older brother, sister, and I were each given a white cardboard […]
Why Summer Camp Should Be on Your Student Ministry Calendar
For the past ten years, I have heard whispers questioning the validity of summer youth camp. As the whispers turned more frequently into questioning voices from passionate youth ministers, I felt a need to weigh-in on the subject. Camp or no camp? Unquestionably, all student ministry programming should be held to honest evaluation and scrutiny. […]
